REVIEWS FOR MCDOUGALL & DONKIN

THE TIMES 26/08/00
Charlotte McDougall and Susie Donkin.. are proving to be a formidable live act. Their old-fashioned show is an unashamedly old-fashioned affair, featuring a dizzy collection of witty, neatly-constructed sketches linked by tinkling, variety-hall piano music.. (Stephanie Billen)

METRO 18/08/00  ****
There is no let-up in the laughter until Nolene and Jolene (back-packers from Tazz) wave their goofy goodbyes and go off in search of a sanger and a shag. Each sketch is a minefield of accents, comic miming and razor-sharp observations... Parody aside, the couple have a bizarre, off-the-wall edge to their humour which often leaves you gasping with shock. It is rare and wonderful thing to find comedians who can combine writing talent with perfect comic timing, great acting and facial expressions that make you weep. (Violet Nutting)

THE TIMES 18/08/00
Talents lie strongly in clever wordplay and verbal characterisation... Enthusiastic Edwardians, compulsively hyphenating Edinburgh ladies and glossy-haired dog handlers all add to the likable mix currently pulling in a strong, appropriately teatime crowd. (Hettie Judah)

THE LIST 17/08/00  ****
Through a host of superbly energetic sketches, these two writers for Channel 4's Smack the Pony create a world where the banal everyday meets the wilfully absurd with rib-tickling results [and] race through their bizarre world with near perfect timing. ... The two women work delightfully together, and aren't afraid to drift away from the belly laughs and be a bit more adventurous. They even have a couple of funny songs - will wonders never cease? (Doug Johnstone)

THE STAGE 10/08/00
Two bright and personable comediennes offer a fast-moving hour of sketches without a dud in the bunch... Even the more familiar material, like a parody of a talentless improv act, is carried by the duo's engaging personalities. And they never fall into the trap of extending a gag too long, some bits being little more than one-line blackouts. More constant chuckle than guffaw, more put you in a happy mood that make you die laughing, this is just right as an afternoon break. (Gerald Berkowitz)

THE SCOTSMAN 12/08/00 ****
Charlotte McDougall and Susie Donkin are an absolute joy. They sped through an hour of brilliant sketches. The spunky twosome continually switch styles with barely a chance to draw breath. They indulge in some virtuoso wordplay and almost groaningly funny punning. (Jane-Ann Purdy)
